Norbert Sprongl is an Austrian composer, born April 30, 1892 in Obermarkersdorf and died April 26, 1983 in Mödling. Sprongl was born into a family of musicians. He obtained his diplomas at the teacher training center in Graz (in piano, violin and organ).

From 1910, he was a professor in Tulln (Lower Austria) then in 1915, he began teaching at the Vienna Academy of Music. Finally, he taught in Viennese primary schools until 1945.

From 1923 to 1933, alongside his teaching activity, he continued his musical studies at the Vienna Music Academy, where he studied composition with Joseph Marx, music history with Robert Lach (poet, composer and musicologist) as well as the piano with Norbert Kahrer and Franz Moser.

In 1936, his compositions already began to be played (in the large Viennese music association hall, one of his piano concertos can be heard) and already enjoyed international success (lieder recital in Paris in 1934).

Other students at that time were K. Etti, A. Kaufmann, H. Pfrogner, H. Sandauer, Rob. Wagner and P. Walter.

After the Second World War, Sprongl, who had lived in Mödling since 1947, devoted himself entirely to music and musical composition and his works were performed in Budapest, Munich, Hanover, Brussels and London.

In 1956, he became a professor of composition in Mödling, and a member of the Mödling artists' association.

In 1959, Sprongl was the founder of the Lower Austrian Composers' Working Group, which he led until 1972 and then continued with his successor, Ferdinand Weiss.

In the 1960s he was considered the leading composer in Lower Austria.

HIS WORKS

Norbert Sprongl created more than 200 works, including four symphonies, chamber and piano music, several instrumental concertos and numerous Lieder. He developed a style of composition of “free dissonance” inspired by Bartok and Hindemith, favoring bitonal chords and fourth chords.

He is one of a handful of Viennese composers who approached the cellist and mandolinist Vincent Hladky from the 1930s.

Norbert Sprongl is mainly known to mandolinists for his duet for mandolin and guitar which combines the influence of the music of the Vienna school (Schoenberg, Webern, Berg, Krenek), and neotonal and modal music.

About the Trio op. 151 for three mandolins

This Trio synthesizes these two major trends and treats the mandolins as three equal instruments which concert, oppose, sing and dance together.

Challenging and virtuosic, this triptych, rarely performed, was recorded for the first time on the CD “Trois Portraits” by the Nov Mandolin Trio in 2012.
